UPDATE 9:20 p.m., June 2: The RailHawks drew the USL-2 Charlotte Eagles as their first-round opponent. The game will be played June 15 at 7:05 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. CASL Elite will travel to Charleston on the same date to face the USL-2 Battery. Should the RailHawks and CASL Elite win their matches, they will meet in the second round.
The draw for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open may occur Wednesday, perhaps even before the final qualifier, between Real Salt Lake and DC United, takes place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Earlier today, the operator of the U.S. Open Cup Twitter account broadcast the following: “Expecting the @USOpenCup bracket to be released tomorrow (Wednesday). Maybe earlier. Note: Final qualifier Wed. @RealSaltLake at @DCUnited.”
Just a notion here, but given that Raleigh-based CASL Elite has qualified for the U.S. Open Cup, could the RailHawks find themselves on the pitch against former teammates and a former coach?
That’s right. CASL Elite qualified for the Cup last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala., by playing three games in two days. The squad won handily, winning twice and drawing once against clubs from Atlanta, Houston and Tulsa.
Among the names that will be familiar to RailHawks fans are Chris McClellan, Jacob Coggins, Steven Curfman and USL Hall of Famer and former RailHawks head coach Scott Schweitzer. The CASL Elite also have one player, Evan Brown, who was in the MLS last season, with Seattle.
Schweitzer was the RailHawks’ first coach, compiling an aggregate record of 24-24-24. He took the RailHawks to a not-bad inaugural season that featured a trip to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, a run that included a victory over the Chicago Fire. His second campaign wasn’t as successful, and the RailHawks missed the playoffs. After the season, his services weren’t retained, and he was succeeded by Martin Rennie, the current head coach.
