Today, U.S. Soccer announced that the U.S. Women’s National Team will face Switzerland in an international friendly on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
This will be the first time the senior women’s squads for the U.S. and Switzerland have faced each other. The U.S., currently the top-ranked team in the world by FIFA, will attempt to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup this October at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship tournament.
Switzerland, currently ranked no. 19 in FIFA’s world rankings, is one of six nations that have already qualified for next year’s World Cup in Canada.
The U.S. WNT has a long history with Cary and WakeMed Soccer Park. This match will be the sixth time the U.S. Women have played at WakeMed Soccer Park. The last occasion was May 2011, when the U.S. Women took on Japan in a tune-up to the 2011 Women’s World Cup. That match ultimately proved a preview of the World Cup final, which was won by Japan.
Moreover, several stars of the current U.S. WNT attended the University of North Carolina, including Heather O’Reilly, Tobin Heath, Allie Long and others.
Although the U.S. Women roster has not yet been named, a source with knowledge of the situation informs INDY Week that the U.S. expects to field a largely first-team lineup.
Kickoff of the Aug. 20 friendly will be 7:30 p.m. Log onto USSoccer.com for ticket information.
