USA Baseball’s National Team has started a series of intrasquad games at the National Training Complex in Cary, as the team played last night and will play again tonight at 6:30.

Here’s a report on the opener, compiled from the press release:

Florida’s Preston Tucker launched a sacrifice fly to right to score Rick Hague of Rice in the sixth as the Reds defeated the Blues 2-1.

Blake Forsythe of Tennessee launched a two-out, full-count solo homer to left in the top of the first for the Blues. But the Reds’ Tyler Holt (pictured) of Florida State scored on a grounder to short by Middle Tennessee’s Bryce Brentz in the bottom half of the inning.

Hague led off the Reds’ sixth with a single, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Tucker’s sac fly.

There were only five hits in the game. Holt finished with two hits while Cody Wheeler of Coastal Carolina pitched three solid innings of relief, striking out four without allowing a hit to get the win.

Sonny Gray of Vanderbilt started for the Blues and pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and three strikeouts. Asher Wojciechowski (0-1) of The Citadel took the loss.

Friday night’s game in Cary will be a ticketed event, while the National Team’s first game against outside opposition is a week from tonight against Canada. Here’s the team’s full schedule.
