If your idea of a great hotel is a Hampton Inn, then Duke Tower Hotel is probably not for you. Duke Towernamed for its iconic 65-foot tall brick tower constructed in 1890is anything but a cookie-cutter chain hotel.
Just walk into the large, lush central courtyard bursting with flowers, the pride and joy of Duke Tower’s general manager, Valerie Blettner. In addition to the serenity of the garden, the courtyard contains a large outdoor pool, shuffleboard, a mammoth chess board with human-size pieces, and the Lee Richardson Putting Course built in loving memory of Val’s late husband. Duke Tower is a unique, extended-stay, all-condominium hotel located within walking distance of downtown Durham’s restaurant and entertainment district.
Val and Lee met in 1983 at SAS when Val was a computer programmer and Lee served as vice-president for Asia and Latin America. Lee went on to several early stage tech companies even as he and Val invested in Duke Tower and then purchased the hotel’s management company. When Val retired from SAS, she worked full time creating a boutique hotel experience at Duke Tower.
Because Duke Tower has a private, cloistered feel from the outside, Durham residents can pass by the hotel every day without ever realizing what lies within. Yet it is the only Durham hotel listed in all translated versions of the Lonely Planet guide books.
Visitors stay in roomy condominium suites, each completely furnished with full-sized kitchens and a living and dining room area and Tempurpedic mattresses on every bed.
