Last week, Record Store Day—the annual event that champions and aims to boost sales at independent record stores—announced its list of releases for the worldwide celebration on April 18. With it, Merge Records unveiled that it would be reissuing William Tyler’s 2008 LP Deseret Canyon, which was originally released under the name The Paper Hats on the German label Apparent Extent in 2008. It was Tyler’s first full-length album of (mostly) solo long-form jams; the 45 RPM double-LP reissue will give new life to a record whose original release was limited to, Tyler says, 500 copies.
But Merge’s RSD plans don’t stop there. They’ve teamed with Durham’s Bull City Records for an afternoon of rock ‘n’ roll. William Tyler will perform, as well as the more boisterous Mac McCaughan and Ex Hex. The outside event is free and starts at 3 p.m., but get there early, as RSD and those bands all attract significant crowds independently. (The store itself opens at 11 a.m.) Lagunitas Brewing will also be on hand to quench your thirst. If you can’t make it out, you can live stream the event via WXDU, or download it later courtesy of the folks at NYCTaper.
