Duke Performances’ annual Music in the Gardens series is a highlight of the summer. Running weekly from the beginning of June through the end of July, this year’s series will feature a slate of folks with one foot planted in tradition and the other pointing toward the future.
Richmond’s No BS! Brass Band will make a for a super fun opener June 1, with local favorites Mount Moriah and Skylar Gudasz making appearances in the following weeks. Leyla McCalla and Sierra Hull are aces on the cello and mandolin, respectively, while William Tyler and Jake Xerxes Fussell will sling tunes via Telecasters. In the final two weeks of the season, Jonathan Byrd’s straight-up Americana will yield to the Black Twig Pickers’ weird and wonderful expansions on old-time music.
Tickets go on sale May 3, running $5 for Duke faculty and students and $10 for the general public. Children ages twelve and under get in free, and all shows begin at seven p.m., making these a great family-friendly outing, too.
In addition to the Music in the Gardens lineup, Duke Performances has also announced it will present a two-night stand at Page Auditorium with tap dancer Savion Glover and jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette June 20–21. Those performances are presented in conjunction with the American Dance Festival and were originally a part of Duke Performances’ regularly scheduled season. Tickets for that run between thirty-five and fifty-five dollars.
