Birds of Avalon
Motorco Music Hall, Durham
Friday, Dec. 4, 2015
Birds of Avalon held down the middle slot on the impressive ReverbNation-sponsored bill at Motorco a few weeks ago. Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan opened the evening by playing solo, but crowd chatter soon drowned out his brief set.
But Birds of Avalon would not have to battle the same noise for very long. From nearly the first note, the hypnotic set drew the audience in deep. The group was in top form, too, with equal parts heavy riffs, pounding dual drummers and mesmerizing synths, all accompanied by Tim Lemuel’s projections over the group, all bathed in red light.
Below are several clips from the evening’s performance, including the unreleased song “Emblems”—as well as “Guffaws” and “Wasted Hours” from the band’s 2015 EP, Disappearance.
