In one of the more interesting roots music bills in recent memory, blues singer Charlie Parr joined Asheville-based bluegrass group Town Mountain for a performance Friday night at The Pour House. Parr opened the evening with a mesmerizing set of acoustic blues numbers. Despite battling the idle chatter of many in the crowd, Parr delivered an amazing set while captivating several folks who hung on every note he plucked.
The bluegrass group Town Mountain was up next. They made quite a splash at this year’s IBMA festival in Raleigh and are currently riding the wave from their solid release, Leave the Bottle. Despite not having fiddle ace Bobby Britt in attendance, they still delivered a set of strong originals and a few choice covers.
Quick note: Though the bill offered dual performers in top form, both had to battle against a crowd that ostensibly paid their own money to watch their performance but mostly talked over it. As has been a common complaint of performers and audience members alike, the Pour House would do well to remind their audience to take their chatter upstairs or outside. Maybe put up witty sign or two?
