Shooter Jennings & Waymore’s Outlaws

The crowd that arrived at Motorco early on May 4 were treated to a forty-five minute set from Waylon Jennings’s former backing band, Waymore’s Outlaws. Tommy Townsend provided lead vocals, though the group was actually anchored by longtime Waylon confidant and drummer Richie Albright. Giving the crowd their fill of Waylon hits made a great deal of sense when the time came for Shooter, Waylon’s son, who has made a career of veering away from his father’s trademark sound.
After a brief “Waylon Fucking Rocks Block” (a reference to the weekly block of Waylon tunes played on his Sirius/XM show), Shooter took the stage with a “Fuckin’ Southern” shirt and worked through a handful of new numbers. The first was his Cheerwine-influenced tune “Can You Come Over?,” from producer Dave Cobb’s Southern Family compilation. Next up was “I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone,” off of his latest release Countach (For Giorgio). Albright (from whom Shooter Jennings gets his middle name) and multi-instrumentalist Fred Newell showed considerable versatility, switching styles on the discernibly heavier tune. “Don’t Wait Up (I’m Playin’ Possum),” the George Jones-inspired tune, and Jones’s own “The Door” served as highlights. Both took a heavier turn.
