Indigo Girl Amy Ray arrived at Durham’s Motorco Music Hall late last month to play songs from her new country-rock album, Goodnight Tender. That LP includes local contributions from Mount Moriah’s Heather McEntire (who adds harmonies and contributes a song) and brothers Brad and Phil Cook, both of Megafaun.
McEntire opened, joined by Nick Petersen and Missy Thangs. She played a handful of new songs. Ray arrived with a six-piece band she’d dubbed the “Nice Boys,” and her fiercely loyal crowd cheered as though welcoming back a conquering hero. The evening’s setlist began with a “The Gig That Matters”— with its closing instrumental breakdown, the good-time number set the tone for an evening of refreshing country.
