A group of “concerned Christian clergy, community leaders and lay ministers” in the Triangle are asking people to pray at the Durham County Main Library tonight in response to a talk about drag shows and a scheduled drag performance.
The anti-gay flyer targets the public event, led by Michelle Robinson, assistant professor of American Studies at UNC, and the INDY’s story, “Gay Is OK,” published last week, about middle-school kids fighting to form a gay-straight alliance in Orange County.
“Pray over the parking lots, doorways, auditorium (chairs), restrooms, etc.” the flyer reads. “Block and cleanse demonic strongholds … Be prayerfully present at the library in the general areas before, during and/or after the program.”
Joanne Abel, program director at the library, told the INDY she has received no complaints about the event.
The flyer lists organizers as Anne Graham Lotz of Angel Ministries, based in Raleigh, and Frances May. [Update: A reader noted that Lotz is an evangelist who says God revealed to her that the end is near.]
Tonight’s event at the library, 300 N. Roxboro St., starts at 7 p.m.
