Food, song, a silent auction and the not-so-silent radio firebrand and author Jim Hightower are in the mix for A Celebration of Free Voices for Democracy, a fundraiser for The Institute for Southern Studies, Southern Exposure magazine and Democracy North Carolina. In addition to a talk that is sure to feature tidbits from Hightower’s latest book, Thieves in High Places, Democracy North Carolina’s Bob Hall will receive a lifetime achievement award for his work on campaign finance reform and social justice issues. Music by the Fruits of Labor Singing Ensemble and Armand & Bluesology. Silent auction items include gift certificates for local restaurants, original artwork, tickets to Carolina Panthers games, books and more. 7-11 p.m. Tickets $20 ($10 student/low-income) with scholarship tickets available as well. Space is limited so RSVP at www.southernstudies.org or 967-9942.
