To take the Daily Caller’s word for it, you’d have to believe that Durham’s Central Park School for Children is preparing students for a Marxist education at Universidad de La Habana.
And it’s all because a teacher dared — gasp — to teach first-grade students about Black Lives Matter, and plan a march with them in support.
From the Daily Caller, on Wednesday:
Central Park School for Children in Durham, North Carolina has enrolled grade-school students in a “Black Lives March and Rally” scheduled for March 17, 2016. The teachers can opt-in or opt-out their classes, but parents have not been given a choice.
The post titled “First-Grade Teachers in Durham Enroll Kids in Black Lives Matter March” takes aim at Durham’s Central Park School for Children, a K-7 public charter school in Downtown Durham that specializes in project-based learning.
The piece was written by Robert Mihaly, a renowned and very talented sculptor whose public achievements in North Carolina include this piece at the grave of Elizabeth Edwards, and a stunning memorial to her son Wade Edwards, who was killed in a car crash in 1996.
It just goes to show how a guy who’s capable of contributing such beauty to the world can contribute things to the internet that, well, aren’t so beautiful.
From The Daily Caller:
Stef Bernal-Martinez, a teacher of 6-year-old children, signed up all the children in her class for a “Black Lives March and Rally” to take place during the school day, at the city’s downtown Central Park and Farmer’s Market. Ms. Bernal-Martinez describes herself as a “Radical Queer Progressive Educator” and “white-passing Xicana.”
“He did some Google-ing,” Bernal-Martinez figures, “and probably found something written about me. When I Googled myself after reading that article to find out where, I found a few websites where I’ve been asked about my racial and social identity. He just sort of quoted that.”
And it seems straightforward enough, right? There’s nothing wrong, after all, with reporting that “a teacher of 6-year-old children … describes herself as a ‘Radical Queer Progressive Educator’ and ‘white-passing Xicana,’” without editorial comment in that particular paragraph.
Right? Riiiiiight.
But on a site like Daily Caller, that tactic can be described as throwing chum in the water. And the sharks do show up:
But anyway, do go on, Mr. Mihaly:
The event, like the Black Lives Matter movement itself, is less a spontaneous protest movement than a divide-and-conquer campaign by elite leftists. Two out of three African-Americans prefer the hrase “All Lives Matter” to “Black Lives Matter” according to a national August, 2015 Rasmussen poll. The grade school is predominantly Caucasian, but run by radical leftists. Naturally the school didn’t send the parents consent forms.
Naturally.
Anyway, we asked Bernal-Martinez, the indoctrinator in question, about Thursday morning’s march, which commenced at around 8:45.
.
“It was really fun and exciting,” she reported. “It was a beautiful day.”
Sixteen kids from her class were joined by seven other classes as they marched around the school and down Geer Street.
“The project that my class took on in this quarter was a study of the Black Lives Matter movement,” says Bernal-Martinez. “And so, we’ve been investigating and asking questions about the issues and the causes that people are fighting for, and my kids really took it on. And they were very excited to, sort of, join the movement themselves.”
According to Bernal-Martinez, the idea to march came from the students.
“They were like, ‘Well, people in the civil rights movement and people in the Black Lives Matter movement have always changed things by marching. We need to march.’”
The event was organized for the last day of the quarter. The community was invited.
“It was really just a celebration,” she says.
Mihaly, apparently, found nothing to celebrate. After a few paragraphs about the polarizing evil he sees in the BLM movement, he says this:
Several parents have suggested that if the grade school must do a march and rally, they should switch the theme to “All Lives Matter.” Some parents quietly express reservations. Multiple parents have met with the director to suggest a more inclusive event. However, the school is not backing down.
Bernal-Martinez says that the power of consent was given to children in other classes, who received written invitations from students in her class.
Some classes, she says, chose not to participate, simply because it “was not their passion right now.”
To one of Mihaly’s complaints, she responds: “It wasn’t the formal consent process. It was about, do the kids want to do this, or not? It’s about the children’s agency.”
So, why did Mihaly choose this particular topic to blog on the Daily Caller?
“He’s a parent in my class,” Bernal-Martinez says.”I actually, unfortunately, have not had any direct communication with him.”
Still, she says she “gets wind” of some of the things he posts online.
“He has expressed that kids shouldn’t learn about stuff like this,” she says, “and that racism doesn’t exist, and that it doesn’t look like the picture that I’ve been painting.”
And by the way, Mihaly sends two kids to that school.
Now, dear reader, you may ask yourself: Why, oh why, would he put his two children in such an evil, lib-indoctrinating school “run by radical leftists” if he hates it so much?
We asked ourselves the same question. Then we asked Mihaly.
“Well, generally, it’s a pretty good school,” he says. “It has good results, and that’s the sort of thing people look at. There’s a really nice community there.”
Yeah, we’re flummoxed, too, folks.
Bernal-Martinez says she’s only received one nasty email as a result of the publicity, and some mean comments on a YouTube video in which her students invited an activist to the march.
That video, she says, has been deleted “for the children’s safety.”
