Durham Police Chief José Lopez announced a dozen promotions Wednesday, including naming Jim Bjurstrom a new deputy chief. Bjurstrom has been filling in as deputy chief for the past three months after the hastened retirement of Beverly “B.J.” Council, who was tied up in the police department’s overtime scandal late last year.

According to a news release, Bjurstrom has been with the department 27 years, and is a graduate of Shaw University and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
