Complaints about the late starting time of a lot of music shows–clocking in at 11 or 12 p.m. sometimes–are justified in our area, especially if you have to work the next day. The folks at Kings and Grid Sector have come up with a series of gigs to comfort the woes of those who miss their favorite bands or who’ve become bloodshot-eyed and sleep-deprived ad infinitum. The Sunday Matinees at Kings have doors opening at 4:30 in the afternoon, with music starting at 5 p.m. This week features a couple of fine local pop-rock bands, and their pairing is made for a sleepy Sunday afternoon. Chapel Hill’s North Elementary started out as very quiet, slow-tempo pop, but are now fleshing out their songs with heavier riffing and loud guitar work. They’re often accompanied by some films or visuals for your pleasure, too. Laramie UK really create a vibe with their hushed guitar and organ, settling into sometimes melancholy, always fuzzy-around-the-edges pop songs. Sounds like a great way to end your weekend.
