Good morning. Here’s what you missed over the weekend.
1. Donald Trump immediately made a virulent racist his #2 advisor in the White House.
President-elect Donald Trump — take that in, ruminate, get angry about it and do something — has made his first two picks for his administration public; RNC chairman Reince Priebus for chief of staff, and Breitbart CEO and Steve Bannon for “chief strategist and senior counselor.”
Here are some headlines and excerpts from pieces that have run on Breitbart under Bannon’s tenure:
- Why Equality and Diversity Departments Should Only Hire Rich, Straight White Men: When you allow identity politics to run rampant and you’re too terrified to question someone just because they have a certain skin colour, gender or sexual orientation, you create monsters.”
- “Science Proves It: Fat Shaming Works: If you are obese, you should hate yourself.”
- “The Solution to Online ‘Harassment’ is Simple: Women Should Log Off: Women are—and you won’t hear this anywhere else—screwing up the internet for men by invading every space we have online and ruining it.”
- “Donald Trump Would Be the Real First Black President: As president, he wants to boost American manufacturing jobs, bringing factories back from overseas. Black Americans have traditionally flocked to such jobs…”
- “Does Feminism Make Women Ugly?: Muscle mass and distribution can shift and hair grows faster and more thickly.”
- “Gabby Giffords: The Gun Control Movement’s Human Shield: Background checks don’t work, and Giffords’ attacker is living proof of that.”
Here’s what Bannon’s ex-wife told police when they charged him with domestic assault.
There had been a history of physical altercations in their relationship, Bannon’s then-wife relayed. “In the beginning of their relationship, she said they [had] 3 or 4 argument that became physical and they had been going to counseling. There has not been any physical abuse in their arguments for about the past 4 years. [REDACTED] said they have been arguing a lot, but no violence,” the police report states.
Here’s what he told her about Jews:
Mary Louise Piccard said in a 2007 court declaration that Bannon didn’t want their twin daughters attending the Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles because many Jewish students were enrolled at the elite institution.
“The biggest problem he had with Archer is the number of Jews that attend,” Piccard said in her statement signed on June 27, 2007.
“He said that he doesn’t like the way they raise their kids to be ‘whiny brats’ and that he didn’t want the girls going to school with Jews,” Piccard wrote.
The list of reasons why Bannon is a godawful human being goes on and on. The man is a white supremacist, and given Trump’s well-publicized battles with the Republican establishment, which Priebus represents, Bannon will undoubtedly have more sway over him. God help us all.
2. Pat McCrory demanding recount.
Governor Pat McCrory, who lost his election to Roy Cooper, is demanding a recount.
A “critical error” in the machines used to scan ballots caused the memory cards to fail, Stark said, which made the data unreadable. To count the votes, Stark said Durham County election officials then printed out a log of the ballots and counted them by hand, which Stark said is unreliable.
[…]
In response to Stark’s complaint, Cooper’s campaign on Saturday said the complaint is an effort to undermine the election results.
“What (the NCGOP fails) to mention is that the Durham County Board of Elections is controlled by Republicans who were appointed by Governor McCrory himself,” the Cooper campaign said in a release.
The Durham County Board of Elections received notice of the complaint on Friday and will likely hold a hearing about it on Wednesday, according to Chairman Bill Brian.
3. Not surprisingly, Trump has no idea what he’s doing.
Business Insider:
During Trump’s private meeting with President Barack Obama on Thursday, Trump “seemed surprised” by the scope of the president’s responsibilities, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Trump’s aides were also apparently unaware that the entire staff of the president working in the White House’s West Wing would need to be replaced, according to The Journal.
Obama reportedly will spend more time counseling Trump about the presidency than most presidents do with their successors.
No kidding.
4. Panthers blow it.
The Kansas City Chiefs came back from a 17-0 deficit and beat the Panthers on a last second field goal 20-17 yesterday.
That’s all for today, have a good one.
