It’s no shocker that we recommend you see Stagecoach this weekend. John Ford’s 1939 western is one of the American Film Institute’s 100 greatest films of all time; it won several Academy Awards and is generally credited with creating the western genre as we know it. Oh, and the film also catapulted a little known actor named Marion Morrison into stardom under the name John Wayne. If you’ve seen it before, this time pay special attention to the scenery. Ford picked Utah’s Monument Valley specifically for its majesty and beauty–a fact that plays nicely into the N.C. Museum of Art’s new exhibit In Praise of Nature: Ansel Adams and Photographers of the American West. To get the full impact of the film’s award-winning cinematography, the museum has borrowed a rare, unadulterated, uncolorized copy of the film from the Moving Image Archive at the N.C. School of the Arts. NCMA will show the film twice on Saturday. See “Special Showings” for details.
