Under the slogan “Not the same old new music,” the Durham collective pulsoptional brings refreshing takes on adventurous modern classical compositions by famed pioneers like Steve Reich and Henry Cowell, and their own work. This annual spring concert, held at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, features seven new pieces including work by members marc faris, who also performs as guitarist of local rock band The Sames, orchestral composer David Lipten, and San Diego colleague Christopher Adler, whose Ecstatic Volutions in a Neon Haze was commissioned by pulsoptional. Adler is a composer and improviser with a research background in the traditional music of Thailand and Laos. Call 416-2600 for tickets and info.

pulsoptional continues their partnership with the School of Science and Math through educational and community outreach efforts. A Friday morning seminar with NCSSM students follows this concert.
