In a letter to Governor McCrory, Senator Phil Berger and House speaker Tim Moore, North Carolina’s three congressional Democrats called for a full repeal of HB 2 as soon as the General Assembly goes into session next week.
Congressmen David Price and G.K. Butterfield and congresswoman Alma Adams say the law makes it clear to LGBT individuals that the state of North Carolina “considers them second-class citizens by excluding them from state and local nondiscrimination protections.” The letter also notes that HB 2 weakens employment protections for millions of North Carolinians and “tramples on the sovereignty” of local governments.
The letter says the Obama administration is currently reviewing HB 2’s implications for the state in terms of how it could affect a range of federal programs, including Title IX funding for education. It says Gov. McCrory’s executive order doesn’t correct the “broad injustices” contained in the bill, which has already cost the state hundreds of jobs and has “jeopardized $560 million in private-sector economic activity through 2018.”
