Prior to the Carolina Panthers’ Super Bowl loss to the Denver Broncos last month, N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper made one of those media-friendly “bets” where the loser has to wear the other team’s jersey and send over a case of Omaha Steaks or whatever.
The Panthers, and McCrory, lost. As a result, McCrory made this video where he wore a Broncos jersey and announced that Butterball was sending over fifty cases of turkey sausages and turkey burgers to a food shelter in Denver, as well as food shelters in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham.
As a sort of follow-up to the bet, a press release notes, McCrory is “hosting” a dinner at the Durham Rescue Mission this evening that is “expected to feed more than 500 homeless men and women from the Durham community and surrounding areas.” Sounds great. We followed up to confirm that the governor will be in attendance. Nope: “The Governor will not be attending due to prior commitments but he has prepared a video address for all event attendees,” a PR rep says.
Oh, well. At least McCrory is doing everything he can to address the needs of North Carolina’s most vulnerable residents. Things like:

*Refusing to expand Medicaid, thereby leaving an estimated 500,000 low-income North Carolinians out in the cold on healthcare.
*Reducing maximum unemployment benefits by nearly $200 per week.
*Imposing a sales tax on car repairs in order to push through a state income-tax cut that disproportionately benefits the wealthy.
But, hey, fifty cases of turkey burgers ought to make up some of that ground. Keep pounding!
