You’ve got to work hard for folks to start calling you Soul Sister Number One. Sharon Jones, hailing from Augusta, Ga., has done just that. She came up as a vocalist with a gospel background, opening shows for groups like The Four Tops and The Drifters, eventually leading her into a long career of studio work. Her star is shining bright now, even as she passes through middle age, with the help of some funk fanatics out of NYC. The folks at Daptone Records, who brought to town Lee “Little J.B.” Fields, are back. Sharon Jones’ crisp delivery and real-deal soulfulness evokes her Southern, bluesy heritage, with the Dap-Kings doing their best to deliver that old-style hard funk sound. That performers like Jones get to come to small clubs and get a crowd to dance up a sweat is the best benefit of this latest funk revival. Two shows in the Triangle, so don’t miss out. Just to make sure everyone gets it there are two Triangle shows. The first is at Local 506 on Saturday, May 8, 10 p.m. and the second in Raleigh at Kings Barcade, Sunday, May 9, 10 p.m.
