The documentary film, Scout’s Honor, traces the conflict between the anti-gay policies of the Boy Scouts of America and a coalition of many of its members to overturn those policies. Told primarily through the experiences of 13-year-old Scout Steven Cozza (who’s now 15), and 69-year-old Dave Rice (now 71), who are both heterosexual, Scout’s Honor relates the painful stories of gay Scouts and Scoutmasters who were expelled from the organization. One of those stories, that of James Dale, received national attention when his case against the Boy Scouts of America reached the United States Supreme Court last summer. Another story features Tim Curran, a gay Eagle Scout who waged a 17-year battle against the Scouts in California. Cozza and Rice have formalized their movement by starting a grassroots petition drive and media campaign to overturn the Scouts’ anti-gay policies. The growth of their organization, Scouting for All, is also documented in the film. There will be a screening of the 85-minute documentary on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 11:30 a.m., at the Sixth Annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre in Durham.
