Tim Lee and Stratocruiser’s Mike Nicholson, musicians and big-time music fans, are guys to whom you want to turn over an interview.
TIM LEE: What’s your favorite Saturday night record and your favorite Sunday morning record?
MIKE NICHOLSON: Saturday night is without a doubt Dave Edmunds’ Repeat When Necessary. It has just enough shit-kickin’ & chicken pickin’ to make me wanna go out and play some rock after watching a rerun of Hee Haw. If I can’t find a copy of Repeat When Necessary, Terry Anderson’s I’ll Drink To That will do. Sunday morning would be Queen’s A Night at the Opera. The first time I heard it was on a Sunday morning at 6 a.m. after my brother brought it home late for me from his job at K-Mart in 1976. Mind-blowing.
Among the many music-fan credentials Lee carries are his cover of an Ian Hunter song on a solo record and his organization of a recent tribute CD for fellow Mississippi native and late author Larry Brown. As for Nicholson, he birthed and bred Sparklefest, a glorious weekend of melodic rock and power pop (that once featured a reunion of Lee’s Windbreakers). Back to regularly scheduled programming.
TIM: If Billy Gibbons and Jimmy Page got in a fight, who would win? (Yeah, it’s a trick question. Page would have Satan on his side, but Dusty would have Billy’s back, so it’s not a fair fight either way.)
MIKE: Well, Jimmy is wiry and would use long, legato punching sequences that would be heavily orchestrated in advance. Billy could still pull out some moves he learned from Buddy Guy and get his licks in. It’d go eight rounds before they both collapsed.
