Lee Smith

Quail Ridge Books and MusicI first appreciated the reach of Hillsborough author Lee Smith years ago, when I was in Alaska and made the acquaintance of a young writer. When she found out I was from North Carolina, she excitedly told me her favorite author and role model was Smith, the author of numerous acclaimed works of fiction. This writer’s enthusiasm made it clear that even if reviewers persist in categorizing Smith as a “regional” writer, her audience can be found anywhere fiction is read. Smith has a new title out, a collection of old and new short stories called Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger. See our interview with Smith on page 23. Smith appears at 7:30 tonight and will also appear Wednesday, March 31, at the Regulator Bookshop. Visit www.quailridgebooks.com. David Fellerath
