Former UNC-Chapel Hill women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell was charged by Durham police Friday for a car crash that killed an 89-year-old pedestrian.

Investigators have charged Hatchell, 67,  with two offenses; misdemeanor death by vehicle and a moving violation.

The accident happened on Monday around noon in a parking lot on Farrington Road near the O2 Fitness Center.

Police say the victim, Betty Colby, was struck by Hatchell’s car after she made a slow left turn in front of the fitness center.

Colby fell backward from the impact of the vehicle and hit her head on the pavement, investigators say. She died on Wednesday from her injuries, police Captain Melissa Bishop reported.

Investigators have ruled out speed or impairment as factors in the accident.

Hatchell was one of the longest-tenured coaches in Division I women’s basketball, having coached at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1986, CBS Sports reported.

Hatchell resigned in April reported following an independent investigation that found she made racially insensitive remarks to her players and forced some to play while injured.

Durham police could not be immediately reached for comment Friday night.
