A Look at Early Voting in the Triangle One Week In

Good morning, readers.

Today marks one week since the start of early voting, and North Carolinians have been swarming the polls. Voters set an opening-day record last Thursday when 353,166 of them cast ballots across the state. Then on Sunday, we surpassed one million votes statewide—that’s about 13 percent of North Carolina’s 7.8 million registered voters. 

Early voting is off to a strong start locally, too. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at turnout across the Triangle so far using state and county Board of Elections data.

Wake County:

Number of registered voters: 857,623

Unofficial early voting turnout to date: 190,030

Highest single-day turnout so far: Monday, October 21 (31,797 votes)

Busiest early voting location: John M. Brown Community Center in Apex (13,772 votes so far)

Durham County:

Number of registered voters: 249,891

Unofficial early voting turnout to date: 69,665

Highest single-day turnout so far: Thursday, October 17 (12,859 votes)

Busiest early voting location: East Regional Library in Durham (8,652 votes so far) 

Orange County:

Number of registered voters: 113,695

Unofficial early voting turnout to date: 33,476

Highest single-day turnout so far: Monday, October 21 (5,681 votes)

Busiest early voting location: Orange Works in Hillsborough (7,566 votes so far)

Early voting continues through November 2 and Election Day is, of course, November 5.
