Good morning, readers.
Students, faculty, and community groups are renewing their calls for Duke University to invest in employees rather than cut costs.
Matt Hartman reports for the INDY that this latest push is bolstered by an audit released by Duke’s American Association of University Professors, which concluded that Duke is in good financial shape and didn’t need to cut 600-plus jobs last summer in response to federal funding woes.
A Duke spokesperson said the university could not comment on the audit because it was not involved in preparing it.
“We regularly share information about the university’s finances and outlook with faculty through the university’s shared governance process,” a spokesperson told Matt. Duke also declined to respond to criticisms that the cuts were unnecessary.
Read more below about the audit, Duke’s response, and activists’ calls for a more progressive vision of higher education.
