Good morning, readers.
Back in 2018, when I was an INDY staff writer covering Durham, I wrote about a new plan to build mixed-income, mixed-use housing on county-owned land. “With a Plan for Two Main Street Sites, Durham County Makes Its ‘First Foray’ Into Affordable Housing,” the headline read.
Last week, INDY’s Justin Laidlaw brought readers an update on one of those sites: Affordable units on the 300 block of East Main Street are nearly ready, and lease applications for the building, called Renegade Apartments, will be accepted starting this week. It’s a milestone in a years-long effort to take advantage of publicly owned land in order to build centrally located and sorely needed affordable housing, including rare units available to tenants earning 30 percent of the area’s median income.
“It’s expensive to do it downtown,” Nida Allam, chair of the Durham County commission told Justin. “The only way we were able to do this is because the county put in the funding and used our own land.”
Read more below about the Renegade apartments, a one-day opportunity to submit applications, and future plans for making the most of Durham’s publicly owned land for more affordable housing.
