Good morning, readers.
I’m noticing some irony in writing my first INDY newsletter intro for my last assignment as an intern (it might be a little late for introductions, but I’ll say hello anyway). I spent my summer having a wonderful time working for the INDY, so it felt a little bittersweet stepping back onto UNC’s campus for the fall semester.
The last time I was here, six UNC students had just learned their visas were revoked. They were a few out of over 1,800 international students across the country who had their legal statuses changed by the Trump administration. I revisited that period for the latest edition of Ask INDY after one reader asked us which colleges were collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Although local universities have voiced support for international students, there’s little that public institutions can actually do to stand in the way of ICE officials. Pending legislation like N.C. Senate Bill 153 would ensure further compliance in the UNC system, and Duke University is walking a fine line with threats of federal funding cuts and investigations.

EDUCATION: A group of higher education groups, advised by a vice chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill, are lobbying Congress on a proposal to preserve federal research funding, which has been slashed under the Trump administration, The Assembly reports.
