Welcome to the madness, readers.

College basketball is taking over the Triangle this weekend as the men’s and women’s teams for Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State are on the road to the championship. As Chase Pelligrini de Paur reported yesterday, this is the first time since 2014 that all six teams qualified for the Big Dance.

The women’s tournament has more eyes on it than ever led by the rise of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, who took the country by storm this year on the way to becoming the all-time leading scorer in Division I basketball history for men’s and women’s. Teams across the country, including those in the Triangle, have seen a spike in attendance.

Local businesses also benefit from the stampede of crazed fans seeking good eats and a row of TVs to monitor all the games and their brackets. The millions of dollars North Carolinians will surely win after the floodgates opened for sports betting could bring some surprises to the local economy, if also hazards for young fans who might not fully recognize the risks of online sports gambling.

Lastly, the Triangle has its own Cinderella story to pay attention to this year with the men’s Wolfpack team. After defeating Duke and UNC for the ACC tournament title, NC State, with a No. 11 seed, stepped into the Big Dance on the right foot last night upsetting No. 6 seed Texas Tech with a 80-67 win.

Have a good weekend, everyone.
