Good morning, readers.

On a recent plane ride, I watched (OK, yes, via the screen of the person in front of me) the 2021 blockbuster smackdown Godzilla vs. Kong, and all I could think about was how the Durham Public Schools’ administrators and educators could learn a lesson about teamwork from the monster flick.

Bear with me—there’s a beautiful moment when the two beasts, after trading near-fatal blows for a majority of the film, join forces to take down the man-made enemy, Mechagodzilla, once it proves to be stronger than either of them alone. The two titans tear the head off of their robot lizard challenger and go their separate ways, recognizing each other’s territory in an uneasy standoff that presumably endured after the credits rolled and my plane landed.

At a public meeting on Tuesday, superintendent Anthony Lewis and DAE president Mika Twietmeyer weren’t quite ready to team up and face their own Mechagodzilla—a draft county budget that falls $6 million short of the DPS board’s request—but they seem to be, for now, at least past the most hostile stage of their relationship.

Read more of my latest DPS coverage below. And while you’re checking that out, cast your vote in our beloved Best of the Triangle reader poll; the final voting round to crown winners for Durham County is underway.

And have a good Friday.
