Good morning, readers.

Welcome to the first weekend of 2024.

At Thursday’s work session, the Durham city council narrowed its search to four candidates for the vacant seat representing Ward Three. They are: Amanda Borer, Chastan Swain, Chelsea Cook, and Shelia Huggins. The council will make a final decision at its meeting on Tuesday.

The pool of candidates has an impressive list of qualifications, with degrees from prestigious schools and volunteer service on environmental and health care boards.

But fancy papers and titles alone won’t ensure someone will make an effective civic leader. Leo Williams, who vacated the Ward Three seat when he was sworn-in as mayor in December, will have to work with his colleagues to probe deeper during next week’s interviews and assess the character of each  candidate.

Extra-engaged residents who were hoping for a final four showdown between Borer and her husband, Alexander Williams, who also submitted his name for consideration when applications opened last month, may be disappointed. Questions would surely arise, such as, “Which of their friends would choose to support one spouse over the other?” or “What would dinner table conversations be like in the week leading up to the final vote?”

The citizens of Durham (namely the INDY reporters) unfortunately won’t get their wish this time. Nevertheless, having two enthusiastic, civically-engaged people under one roof could bode well for Borer and Durham residents, should she get the votes. Alexander Williams might be the first person ever to be excited for their spouse to bring work home with them.

Enjoy your weekend, readers.
