Good morning, readers.
This week, I joined some of Durham’s electeds for a visit to Easley Elementary School on Bring Your Legislator to School Day.
The fourth and fifth graders (who were all far too lively for 8:30 in the morning,) confidently grilled their legislators over issues like bullying, teacher pay, and only having a nurse two days a week.
“Teachers earn less than many other jobs despite working more hours,” Elizabeth Medlyn, an Easley fifth grader, told the representatives. “And I love my teachers, they deserve the best. So please consider raising their pay.”
The legislators, all of whom are Democrats in the Republican-controlled chambers, tried to be honest with the students about the future of public education in North Carolina without painting too bleak a picture. Read more below about how Durham’s legislators answered to some of their youngest constituents.
And have a good Thursday.
