Welcome to the weekend, readers.
A new paper dropped on Wednesday. It’s a stellar issue with a smorgasbord of delicious stories from our food coverage including a piece on entrepreneurship from yours truly.
So how did we get here?
Those conversations led me to pursue a deeper look into what other hurdles small business owners, specifically food entrepreneurs, could be facing in an ever-evolving Durham.
Last month, I had the opportunity to visit Rigsbee Avenue and the “DIY district” in downtown Durham to report on the challenges that Fullsteam Brewery, Motorco, and other local businesses face as they navigate the constant disruptions caused by neighboring construction projects.
For this story, I spoke with entrepreneurs at almost every stage of the business journey to better understand what it takes in today’s economy to grow a food enterprise from seed to sapling to stalk. Oh, and if you’re a fan of food puns, you’re in for a treat.
Collaboration is a common value for entrepreneurs in Durham, no matter their level of success.
But with the recent rise in inflation and lingering effects of COVID-19, collaboration isn’t enough to sustain Durham’s vibrant culinary scene. That’s why, at the most recent Durham city council work session, dozens of small businesses owners voiced their frustrations with how the city has fallen behind in its supportive services for small businesses.
The presentation and discussion, led by Downtown Durham Inc. president and CEO Nicole Thompson, laid out a number of possible solutions for how the city and its small business community could more effectively work together to heat up Durham’s local economy. With this year’s budget season ending in June, business owners will likely have to wait until August for any significant changes to take place.
Have a great weekend.
