Good morning, readers.
Early voting for the March 5 primary begins Thursday and the INDY’s election coverage is underway.
We published our endorsements as decided by our staff in our paper last week for local races in Durham, Orange, and Wake Counties. On Wednesday, we will publish our candidate questionnaires on our website. (Please note: we do not use candidate questionnaire responses to inform our endorsements).
In our paper last week, we have a report taking a look at the Wake county commissioners’ District 5 Democratic primary, in which former Wake County school board member Tara Waters, who was appointed to the board in January, has a challenge from community activist and former Raleigh mayoral candidate DaQuanta Copeland. We also have interviews with Durham-based state senator Mike Woodard, who’s running to keep his seat, and Woodard’s challenger, Sophia Chitlik.
Also last week, in partnership with The Assembly, we published a deeply reported profile of Satana Deberry, Durham’s district attorney who is running in the Democratic primary against congressman and social media star Jeff Jackson for state attorney general.
And last month, we reported on Wake County’s four competitive district court races.
We still have much more reporting to come between now and Election Day, and if you’re looking for more statewide coverage, check out some recent stories from our newsroom partners at The Assembly: including an in-depth look at leading Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson; a report on four Democratic state lawmakers who face primary challenges after having voted with Republicans on key bills, and a dive into politicization on the state Supreme Court, which is once again on the ballot this year.
Have a great Monday.
