Good morning, readers.

In April, a Raleigh police officer was let go following an internal affairs investigation, the findings of which were not disclosed at the time. As with the state troopers involved in the crash that killed Tyrone Mason last October, it was reported that Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman was dismissing some of the cases in which the RPD officer, Kyle Epps, was involved (Epps is listed as the arresting officer in hundreds of cases in Wake County).

Now, the INDY is first to report on a court filing this week that sheds light on the internal affairs investigation and what may have contributed to Epps being fired: he conducted illegal searches of people and their vehicles, violating their 4th Amendment rights.

The filing, a motion to suppress evidence and testimony from Epps, comes in a Wake County woman’s case after Epps arrested her last September on charges of DWI, running a red light, and misdemeanor child abuse. The filing accuses Epps of malfeasance in the woman’s case and three others.

Freeman confirms her office has dismissed “dozens” of cases involving Epps to date and is reviewing more. Read the story below.
