Good morning, readers.
You know the massive power outage that paralyzed Spain and Portugal on Monday?
That’s exactly the kind of scenario ham radio operators have been preparing for, as I discovered at Durham County Main Library last week.
Amateur radio isn’t just some quaint hobby for technology nostalgists—it’s drawing packed rooms of newcomers worried about our increasingly fragile infrastructure. The waitlist for the introductory session I attended was so long I only got in with press credentials.
Ham radio operators exist in a fascinating space between past and future, using century-old technology while preparing for whatever breakdown comes next. As Spain and Portugal restore their power systems, I couldn’t help but think about these operators—quietly preparing for precisely such moments while the rest of us take our always-connected world for granted.
Read more below about how the surging interest in ham radio is playing out in Durham.
Have a good Wednesday.
