Good morning, readers.
As you read this, advocates and volunteers have gathered outside the Durham County Courthouse to watch for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Thatโs because yesterday, several plainclothes agents showed up to the courthouse but left after the person they were looking for didnโt show up.
I got to the courthouse around 10 a.m. yesterday, in time to catch county commission chair Nida Allam outside with about 20 advocates and officials.
โThis is a direct threat to the safety and dignity of our communities,โ Allam said at an afternoon press conference alongside city council member Javiera Caballero and school board member Natalie Beyer. โCourthouses should be a place where people can seek justice, not where theyโre hunted down by federal agents.โ
Details about the agents and their intended target were limited yesterday, but the Durham sheriffโs office confirmed to INDY that the department was aware of ICE agents at the courthouse that morning.
With changing policies and increased enforcement, itโs only the latest story of officials in an ultra-progressive city trying to deal with the second Trump administrationโs harsh immigration crackdown.
Read more below and have a good Thursday.
