Good morning, readers.
Starting tomorrow voters in Cary, Chapel Hill and Carrboro head to the polls to cast their votes for local offices, including mayor, town council and school board.
Candidates in each town are naming some of the same priorities, like affordable housing, managing growth, and protecting green spaces. In addition leaders in each jurisdiction will have to balance the costs of those priorities with the cost-burden on the constituents.
In Cary, three town council seats, one of which is open, are on the ballot, meaning voters will elect at least one new member to a council that has seen shake-ups in recent years. In Chapel Hill, the mayor is unopposed in her reelection bid and five candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for four seats on the town council. In Carrboro, there are three candidates seeking three seats on the town council and the mayor there is sure to sail to re-election. Voters in both towns will also be able to make their picks for three seats on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School board, for which there are also three candidates.
In making endorsements for each of these races, we reached out to all of the candidates, attended forums and talked to others knowledgeable about local politics. We considered who would bring relevant experience, specific ideas, and genuine community engagement to the roles.
Here are our endorsements for the Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro and CHCCS races.
