Good morning, readers.
It’s Super Tuesday! But every day is super when it begins with the INDY newsletter. Right?
Fifteen states, including North Carolina, hold their primary elections today. Locally, that means we’ll be reporting results tonight for the state house and senate, board of county commissioners, school board, and judges races that we’ve been covering for the past two and a half months.
- Find our full primary election coverage (stories, endorsements, questionnaires, and more) here.
- And read our election live blog here. Keep that page open tonight, as my colleagues and I will be reporting election results live from watch parties across the Triangle and bringing you the latest results.
This weekend, I went to a Nikki Haley rally in Raleigh, where she told the crowd to “text and email all your friends, all your family” to go vote.
She also mentioned that “Joe Biden [focuses] more on gender pronouns than whether our kids can read them.” She promised that if she is the nominee, Republicans will win a “mandate getting our kids reading again and go back to the basics in education.”
That language sounded awfully familiar to me, because I’ve been working on a story about the Orange County Schools Board of Education election in which the culture wars have been raging for years. In that local race, groups like the Proud Boys and Moms for Liberty have united with traditionalist moderates in order to push back against the socially progressive agenda of the board’s liberal bloc.
This is the first election since the district ousted its former superintendent in 2023. So far, everyone has rallied around the new superintendent, pinning their hopes and dreams on her ability to chart a new path forward.
It all makes for an interesting school board race. Check out my full story here.
And have a super Tuesday.
