Good morning, readers.

This weekend, immigrant rights group Siembra NC announced it had received “multiple credible reports” that ICE agents were being deployed to the Raleigh area this week for a new, month-long operation.

Triangle-area elected officials contacted by INDY on Monday said they couldn’t confirm or deny Siembra’s report; ICE isn’t required to notify local law enforcement of its plans. And as of Monday afternoon, Siembra had “not verified any unusual ICE activity in the state over the last two days,” the organization posted on Facebook.

ICE, for its part, denied Siembra’s initial report in a statement to the INDY but underscored that the agency is active in the area “every day” and “we do stuff as we see fit or need to.” Siembra and local officials are erring on the side of caution.

“Residents should stay alert and prepared for any developments,” Durham mayor Leonardo Williams wrote in a statement.

Holiday Party

Holiday Sauce—from performance artist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Taylor Mac—is both a raucous holiday cabaret and a deeply felt tribute to a queer elder, Lauren Wingenroth writes for the INDY.
