Good morning, readers.
Late last week, Wake County board of elections officials finished tallying the county’s 6,213 provisional ballots. According to board member Gerry Cohen, 2,385 of those ballots were approved, 785 were partially approved, and 3,043 were not approved.
But of the ballots that were accepted, there were enough votes to give NC House Rep. Terence Everitt the win in NC Senate District 18 after Everitt initially trailed his Republican opponent, Ashlee Bryan Adams, by a razor-thin margin on election night.
Everitt took to his X account this weekend to declare victory.
“I am deeply humbled and incredibly grateful to the voters of Senate District 18 for their trust and confidence in me,” he wrote. “It is an honor to have earned your support, and I look forward to continuing to serve the people of NC…”
Now, 134 votes separate Everitt and Adams and Adams is entitled to call for a recount though elections experts say it probably won’t make a difference in the result.
Elsewhere in the state, six more counties will finish canvassing today. This could impact up-ballot races, particularly the state Supreme Court race between Democratic incumbent justice Allison Riggs and her Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin, an appellate court judge.
Currently, Riggs leads by 24 votes out of 5.7 million cast statewide. If Griffin wins, Republicans will have a 6-1 majority on the state’s highest court.
County-level candidates have until 5 p.m. today to request a recount in their races. Statewide candidates have until noon tomorrow to ask for a recount. You can follow the progress on the statewide canvass here.
Have a good Monday.
