Welcome to the weekend.

In Durham, most of the races on election night were a foregone conclusion. During the People’s Alliance party at Bull McCabe’s on Tuesday night, organizers said much of their political energy from the past several months went into trying to increase voter turnout in Durham and other neighboring counties to swing important state legislative seats, council of state positions, and the presidency in favor of Democrats.

PA members relished the opportunity to celebrate the local candidates that the PAC endorsed, many of whom ran unopposed, but the results of the national races collapsed the crowd’s enthusiasm as updates hit TV screens across the bar.

At the national level, Democrats fell woefully short. But city council member Nate Baker and others who were “nauseously optimistic” at the start of the night found solace in the victories at the state level, including governor, attorney general, and state superintendent, saying those positions “created a buffer” for the Durham community to continue fighting for progressive values.

Durham residents also voted overwhelmingly for the two bond referenda which will invest $200 million in park, street and sidewalk improvements. The parks bond will fund a new trail connecting Long Meadow Park and East End Park, as well as an aquatic center next to Wheels Skate Park. The streets and sidewalk bond will add 12.4 miles of new sidewalks while improving roughly 20 miles, and repave and repair 100 miles of streets while paving over almost 11 miles of dirt roads. Construction projects funded by the bonds are expected to start in the summer of 2025.

Enjoy the long weekend, readers.
