- Ways to Help After the Storm

Good morning, readers.
Orange County is no stranger to flooding. Areas in Chapel Hill like the Camelot Village apartments and University Place, even Eastgate shopping center, have been known to flood in the past. But not like Sunday.
Tropical Storm Chantal dropped as much as 10 inches of rain on Orange County in a matter of hours. It was certainly not the only place hit by the storm—flooding along the Eno in Durham prompted water rescues, and the Haw River crested just below Fran-level records in Chatham County—but the images coming out of Eastgate, downtown Hillsborough’s river walk and neighborhoods situated near creeks in Chapel Hill and Carrboro are sobering.
INDY’s Lena Geller and Chase Pellegrini de Paur set out yesterday to get a handle on the damage. Chase learned fencing around the mound of coal ash in Chapel Hill had been disturbed by flooding, and we’re working to learn more about whether the coal ash was affected.
Lena learned the town of Carrboro’s public works facility is essentially destroyed, police cars and garbage trucks dragged into piles by rushing water.
And all this comes as municipalities are already being squeezed by federal funding cuts and shrinking support from the state.
Read their report below—and with more rain in the forecast, stay safe, readers.
