Good morning, readers.
In the months following October 7, 2024, Henrietta Mason desperately searched for information about the circumstances that led to the death of her 31-year-old son.
Now she—and the public—finally have some answers.
A state trooper, Garrett Macario, was present at the scene of the Capital Boulevard crash where Tyrone Mason died. Macario told responding Raleigh police officers that he wasn’t chasing Mason and just “rolled up” on the wreckage. Macario’s story didn’t add up, and after months emailing state agencies and public officials, Mason asked the SBI to investigate in January.
Prompted by the SBI’s probe, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman dismissed more than 200 cases involving Macario and his supervisor, Matthew Morrison—but it still wasn’t clear what happened. In March, Mason and her attorneys urged officials to release recordings from the crash. The INDY joined a coalition of news outlets in petitioning the courts to do the same, and earlier this month, a judge ordered the North Carolina Highway Patrol to release the recordings.
We got those recordings on Friday, after Freeman announced she wasn’t pursuing criminal charges against Macario or Morrison. Also last week, Henrietta Mason filed a federal lawsuit against Macario, accusing him and Morrison of orchestrating a coverup and violating her son’s constitutional rights to due process.
“Defendant Macario knew or should have known, and every reasonable officer in his position would have concluded, that the failure to render aid to Decedent Mason was cruel and unlawful,” the lawsuit states.
Read about what the recordings show below and have a good Wednesday.
