Good morning, readers.
Calling all heelflippers and nosegrinders. Scrap Exchange is bringing a brand new skate park to the Lakewood Shopping Center in Durham thanks to old reused materials from Wheels.
After the City of Durham bought the Wheels property from its original owners in 2020, they rehabilitated the indoor skating rink, which re-opened in February. But outdoor skating equipment was set to be trashed until Mike Johnston of Manifest skate shop and Scrap Exchange leadership received permission to use it to build a new skate park in Lakewood.
Durham city council still needs to officially approve relinquishing the materials at its meeting on Monday. Then, Johnston says volunteers can get to work on moving the materials and resurfacing the parking lot where the park is being built. One of the most exciting things, Johnston says, is getting the 20-foot half-pipe, the only one of its kind in Durham, up-and-running.
“We don’t have a half-pipe at [the Durham Central Park] skate park, so it’s going to be popping off right away,” he told me.
Like a lot of folks, I re-acquainted myself with skating during the early days of COVID lockdown. I dusted off my inline skates and went down to Durham Central Park to see if this old dog could remember any of his old tricks.
If you feel inspired to find your way back to skating, or want to join in on the fun for the first time, come join your friends at INDY and skate the night away at Rolling’ with Pride on June 12 at Wheels Skate Park. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the LGBTQ+ Center of Durham
