Good morning, readers.

It’s budget season, and for the Wake County school board, that means some difficult math.

At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, we learned that inflation plus population growth plus deferred maintenance plus inadequate state funding plus federal cuts to public education equals … a schools budget that no one is totally satisfied with. Even the people who voted to pass it.

“I am agreeing to this budget proposal, but I do not support it,” board member Lynn Edmonds said following the 6-3 vote.

The budget contains about $20 million in cuts to teacher salary supplements and school support staff. There are no cuts to classroom teacher positions, but teachers, parents, and students told the school board that any reductions at all will have a ripple effect into classrooms.

Read more below and have a good Thursday.
