What’s for Lunch?

Good morning, readers.

What can $15 get you for lunch these days? That’s the question I’m exploring in the INDY’s new “Lunch Money” column, where I’ll be testing the limits of a tight budget at eateries across the Triangle.

For my first adventure, I headed to QueDogs in Durham. After operating as a mobile cart for years, QueDogs opened a charcoal-black shack in Lakewood Shopping Center on March 1.  Their specialty is hot dogs topped with pulled pork barbecue, though their menu options range from basic “Plain Jane” dogs to chili-loaded creations.

At the ordering window, I met Alan, who steered me toward the Que Sandwich with molasses-sweet barbecue and tangy slaw on a pillow-soft bun.

The real budget challenge came with choosing a side. While the house-made potato salad with bacon beckoned, my wallet nudged me toward a trusty bag of Lay’s.
