Good morning, readers.
Durham is fastly approaching the end of budget season, and local leadership still have big decisions to make about how to allocate its limited resources to enrich the lives of as many Durhamites as possible.
Durham County Manager Claudia Hager presented her proposal for the county’s 2025-26 fiscal year budget on Monday, saying the county would prioritize funding for education, public safety and personnel needs.
The county, like Dr. Evil, is projected to have a little over one billion dollars to divvy up between a variety of programs and services. Based on Hager’s proposal, residents should anticipate a county-wide property tax rate of 55.42 cents per $100—but read my story below before you get too excited about a potential tax cut.
The county will vote to adopt its final budget on June 9. In the meantime, if you appreciate our coverage of local government, consider supporting our work by joining the INDY Press Club.
