Good morning, readers.

Back in 2009, Wake County residents were blindsided following an election which resulted in a conservative takeover of the Wake County school board.

The Tea Party-backed board, which included newly-elected members Chris Malone, Debra Goldman, Deborah Prickett, and John Tedesco moved quickly, scrapping the district’s diversity policy in early 2010, causing massive protests, and hiring controversial superintendent Tony Tata the next year.

The takeover didn’t last long; Democrats reclaimed the board in the next election cycle, but they’ve been vigilant in guarding against conservative influence on the board in the increasingly blue county ever since.

Last election cycle, Michele Morrow, the GOP candidate for state superintendent, ran unsuccessfully on a Moms for Liberty slate for a seat on the board. This cycle, Moms for Liberty hasn’t had an obvious presence in the school board elections, but the hallmarks of its platform—rhetoric about “parental rights,” opposition to Title IX rules—are present in several of the races for the five seats on Wake voters’ ballots this fall.

We put together a primer with information on all of the school board candidates running for seats in District 3, District 4, District 5, District 6, and District 8.

Early voting begins next Thursday and Election Day on November 5 is less than a month away.

Have a good Monday.
